Compromise
Anyone who's read my blog for more than just a couple of days knows I'm a student of current events and politics. The subject fascinates me. I read A LOT, and I read material from many sources and from all political persuasions. I don't simply regurgitate whatever one news source or another tells me is "the truth". Too many of us do, and I think it has caused us to become lazy thinkers. Rephrase: "non-thinkers".
Some people seem to want to watch / listen / read ONLY those things that reaffirm what they already believe. No opposing views allowed. "My way or the highway." I'm sorry, but to me that is the height of ignorance. (Yes, you can be "educated" and still be "ignorant".) I believe that a good idea can come from anywhere. Democrats should listen to Republicans and vice versa. Americans should listen to Canadians and French and Australians, etc and vice versa. We all need to shut our mouths once in a while and just listen. Then we can pick the best of everything, regardless of where it comes from, and become better for it.
I have recently been challenged to "pick sides", and told that "middle of the road is too wishy-washy". In this context my challenger means "stand your ground and don't compromise". Let's put this challenge in the context of American history:
My challenger and I are both proud Americans, no doubt. We believe we have an exceptional form of government, cobbled together for us by an incredibly wise group of patriots. "Our Founding Father's" is always spoken in a whispered, reverent tone. What if our Founding Father's had been told to "pick sides" and that "middle of the road is too wishy-washy"? Here's what the history books say of that period:
The US Constitution has been called a "bundle of compromise" due to the fact that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 had to compromise on numerous key points in order to create a new Constitution that was acceptable to each state.
One example....The Virginia Plan called for representation based on the population of each state, while the New Jersey Plan wanted equal representation for each state. The two sides combined both with the Connecticut Compromise, more famously known as "The Great Compromise".
If there hadn't been a room full of "middle of the road wishy-washy" men willing to compromise we wouldn't have a Constitution today. (At least not the one we do now.) Our wise "Founding Father's" would instead be thought of today as just a bunch of stubborn old coots.
And let's be honest...."pick sides / middle of the road is too wishy-washy" is anathema to "compromise". Pragmatists compromise when necessary while ideologues stand their ground regardless. It was pragmatists who founded this country and got things done. God bless 'em.

But they heard the current party line but CHOSE to think for themselves and decided it just wasn't going to work anymore. They wanted something else
And that's what we want now - something else

ReplyDeleteThose who don't understand the importance and benefits of compromise don't have a clue why the US Capitol is in the South. Henry Clay was called "The Great Compromiser" and it was a title he carried with honor. We must get over the modern-day notion that promoting a personal ideology is all that matters.

There is a difference between compromise and choosing sides, Scott. You've confused taking a stand with stubbornness. Further, you suggest that those that disagree with you are parroting some party line and are not as egalitarian as you or, God-forbid, as open-minded. You dismiss those that take a stand as ideologues.
ReplyDeleteIt was not pragmatists that founded this country but those that took a stand and by sacrifice, prevailed. Amongst themselves, they worked out a system that has worked very well to this day.
Compromise? The men who founded this nation did not compromise.
ReplyDeleteWHAT HAPPENED TO THE 56 MEN WHO SIGNED THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.
Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.
So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.
I hail pragmatism. The men who signed the Declaration of Independence WERE pragmatists. Not with the rule of King George but with each other to form a new country. Yes, they were treated badly in years to come but the new United States of America eventually won its freedom because of those men. And their pragmatism.

But according to a report of that time, and corroborated in a book I just read titled "American Icon: Alan Mulally and the Fight to Save Ford Motor Company", if GM and Chrysler had gone broke, they would likely have taken numerous critical parts suppliers with them, vendors who also supplied Ford and Toyota. They...well at least Ford, might have slipped away, too. While your position was economic textbook classic, it was totally out of touch with the reality of the situation at the time. You didn't know what you were talking about.
On another occassion you pointed out that while credit was non-existent after the banking implosion of 2008, cash was plentiful. "My company is self-financed and is doing fine." But guess what, only the tiniest fraction of companies are self financed. All the big boys...Caterpiller, Ford, all the airlines, the manufacturers, telecommunications companies, etc, need credit. Your position was totally out of touch with the reality of the situation of that time.
Seems to me you're getting a very narrow slice of all the information out there for you to peruse. Please...read, study, compare, think...then let's have an intellignent discussion. I love it when someone can make an intelligent argument that actually gets me to change my mind. I'm always open. You should try it.

ReplyDeleteScott, you're welcome to go through google and any other documentation you might have to see how the pragmatists and compromisers gave up so very much to compromise with England (tongue in cheek). I have a number of books on the subject. One of my favorites is Paul Revere's Ride. But I have many more. Perhaps we could compare degrees? That should settle any argument (tongue in cheek, again).

When I read you now, I don't see intellect, I see emotion. You are no longer straddling the fence, you've hopped over onto the Lefty side but you are unwilling to admit that.
You think tax increases are a good idea. However, the reason why is an emotional one: the rich should pay more. Then, you pretend that you are being pragmatic by suggesting that we can raise taxes AND cut spending to balance the budget. But this does not happen, as you SHOULD know but have, apparently, forgotten.
Finally, Scott...you've gotten a bit pompous and arrogant. You suggest that my difference of opinion with you could be overcome if I obtained more information so that I could see the world through your hazy vision. I'm afraid that our intellectual reservoirs are not compatible waters at this time.
I hope that you change your mind before election day but I don't hold out much hope for you. Luckily, as we live in Texas, it's unlikely Obama can carry this state regardless of what you do.
