It didn't work the last time, so...ummm...let's try it again, only this time, we'll MEAN it!
I understand that the New York Times has a front page editorial that calls for the outlawing of private ownership of weapons that can cause mass casualties. This is the epitome of the toothless rhetoric that we always hear after every tragic shooting spree. Would this new law simply rely on voluntary surrender of such weapons? *snicker* Does anyone, even the wildest eyed wild eyed liberal out there think that is ever going to happen? So why waste time writing, debating, voting on, and signing such a ridiculous DOA bill?
Our tendency to "pass a new law" to fix every problem has got to stop. We're just wasting our time. Worthless, unenforceable paper is NOT the answer. We need to turn MENSA loose and task them with finding a real solution.
S
Election material for sure. I wonder why these shooters used AR-15 rifles tricked out with all the toys that can be bought to make them look cool. That was my first thought when news showed guns. Any ISIS fighter would be ashamed. For the amount of carnage they caused, one SKS used properly would have done better. After thinking more, it dawned on me that both people with two Glock 17 pistols could have killed more.
ReplyDeleteIt comes down to be aware of your surroundings and know the exits. This applies to any large group where a disgruntled worker, lover, religion nut or ISIS inspired want to be, decided to go out in glory.
After guns....IED or regular bombs will be weapon of choice and no option for survival. History repeats itself.
Well, that sucks. It used to be you got to the movie theatre early to get a good seat to see the film. Now we have to get there early enough to get a seat by the exit?! Nuts.
DeleteHa, true Bill. I think this bodes well for Netflix.
DeleteLimiting access to assault weapons that can mow a hundred people down in a matter of minutes might not be the perfect solution, but it's a good place to start.
ReplyDeleteBut Stephen, you're butting heads with the NRA and the Tea Party....not a winning strategy. Back up, take deep breath, and ask them what terms they WILL get on board with? They have said they want to get guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable and criminals. Don't we all? So lets start with that. But editorializing a plan to take Bubba's black gun away from him will NOT get Bubba on your side.
DeleteYou've done this particular post, it several iterations, more than a couple times. We get it. Nothing can be done. Trying to do anything is stupid. It's useless to try. Yeah, we get it. Yes, some of us will stupidly keep trying. No, probably nothing you do will stop us.
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm just responding to the NYT same old song that never gets to first base.
DeleteWhat is that definition of insanity? "Doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result." Don't you ever get tired of charging headlong into the NRA bus filled with Tea Party Republicans and getting run over? Why don't you look for something you can do that those two will also get on board with? Like declaring war on those who have guns illegally, such as convicted felons and sending them back to prison, or cutting off the supply of no-questions-asked dark alley gun sales and locking up those who are profiting from the gun trade? Not enough prison space? Build more. Too expensive? Do away with some of those tax loopholes the big corporations get....that should bring in quite a few billion dollars more. As I said, let's find a REAL solution. I'm not fighting you on finding a solution, I just want to find one that has an honest chance of getting past the NRA knuckle draggers and delivering results.
If we had done it five or six massacres ago it would have been much harder for these people to get AR-15s. People have this attitude about climate change too: nothing will happen right away so don't bother. Which is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
ReplyDelete...harder to get AR-15's? Do you know how many MILLIONS of AR-15's there are out there right now? If they never produce another one, there are enough out there to outfit the army of a good sized country. The street price would go up, but if anything MORE would come available for sale. "Money talks", you know.
DeleteHow much do street drugs cost? That doesn't mean we should just let people walk down the road to buy crack from their local pharmacy.
DeleteBut sadly, we do. Ever hear of prescription drug abuse? We can't seem to get a handle on that either.
