Sticker shock

I asked the guy to make me look like this.  When I left he was still laughing.

As I mentioned a few days ago I have several elderly relatives whose time on Earth appears to be limited, so I figured I'd better get ready.  For years my daily wardrobe has consisted of jeans or shorts and t-shirts or polo shirts.  I have some casual pants and nicer shirts that would pass for "business casual", a couple of sport coats, and one suit, my "marryin' and buryin'" suit.

I tried my dressy clothes on and no surprise, they didn't fit well.  The later stages of middle age plus a low thyroid that is jerking my metabolism around meant a trip to The Men's Wearhouse was in order.

I've always found The Men's Wearhouse had good clothes at reasonable prices.  I could go in and be greeted by a knowledgeable sales person who could direct me to a nice suit that made me look less dorky than I really am, without breaking the bank.

Over the weekend K invited (dragged) me to the MW so they could polish me up a bit.  I had decided a sport coat that I already had was sufficiently conservative, so all I needed was a nice pair of dress pants.

The guy took me to the pants dept and went right to a pair that matched well and felt like good quality.  Being a decisive person I said fine, mark 'em for the right length and let me outta here.

But wait, there's more!

Today only, buy one pair of pants, get another pair FREE!  I only needed one pair, but heck, if they're free....  :)  So I took two pair, one charcoal colored, one navy blue, back to the dressing room and tried them on.

He marked the first pair, and as I was taking them off I noticed the price tag:  $190.  For ONE pair of pants?  (Well over $200 with alterations and tax.)  *choke*

Is that the going price these days for a pair of pants, or has The Men's Wearhouse gone all Neiman Marcus on me?  The other pair was less expensive, so I just bought those which were "value priced" and didn't qualify for the BOGO promotion.  Free?  Yeah, right.

Identical twins separated at birth?

I'm in K's doghouse.  I have a special aversion to sunscreen.  It's slimy and I don't like putting it on right after a nice shower.  I feel dirtier than before I took the shower!  Now I've got this skin cancer and it turns out I'll HAVE to dip in the stuff daily. Yuck!  I have to admit it....K has been right all along telling me to slather it on.

Yesterday I had a procedure done where they cut out a small spot on my chest.  All is well.  Then I had to go next door to another Dr. for consultation about the cancer on my nose, right where the nose-piece on my glasses rests.

This guy is a "maxillofacial" specialist.  Next week he's going to cut the spot off and examine it under a microscope to make sure he cut out juuuust the right amount of tissue.  Then he's going to cut skin elsewhere (maybe the bridge of my nose?) and transplant some tissue from there back onto my nose where the boo-boo was.

George Clooney.  Or is it?

I told him as long as he was slicing and dicing I was kinda hoping for the "George Clooney" look, and told him there would be a nice tip in it for him if he could help me out.  He told me he was a simple highly trained medical specialist, not a miracle worker.  :)

So I guess it pays to be a pasty-white little nerd living in mama's basement.  No sun, no skin cancer, no slimy sunscreen.

Sex sells

It seems there were some ruffled feathers at this year's Consumer Electronics Show over the presence of "booth babes".  Anyone who's been to a car show is very familiar with what I'm talking about, but apparently they're just now becoming fashionable in the nerdy world of consumer electronics.  The term simply means attractive, provocatively dressed young ladies who mill around by their sponsor's booth attracting attention.  People, mainly men, walk over to get a closer look and are snagged by the product rep and given a pitch and some literature.

And quite frankly, it works.  Sex (appeal) sells products.  You think Go Daddy would be where it is today without Danica Patrick?  So, I'm wondering....why aren't there "booth hunks"?  Don't tell me women don't like to see good looking men.  George Clooney?  Daniel Craig?  Matthew McConaughey?  Ashton Kutcher?  (I really don't get that one!)  Dos Equis "The Most Interesting Man in the World"?

We all like to look at good looking people, whether they're in a movie, on a magazine cover, at a trade show, or just walking down the street.  And there is a HUGE mega-billion dollar industry that tries to get us to believe WE are good looking people, too.  (See, there is an upside to myopia!)  So what's the big deal over "booth personnel"?  ;)
