Fun weekend...

Saturday morning K & I took Luke to a pet expo at Fair Park in Dallas.  There were agility demos, obedience trainers, different breed rescue organizations, and lots more.  Luke did well considering he was by far the smallest dog there.  He stood his ground most of the time, except when he went nose-to-nose with a giant Bernese Mountain Dog.  It was hard to get a good photo of him as he was moving so fast:

"Ohhh....my big chance!  I can sneak up on these two babes and get a sniff and they'll never even know I was there."

We left there and went by the big Farmers Market in downtown Dallas where I bought some locally grown cantelopes, tomatoes, and a watermelon.  I don't remember fruit and tomatoes ever tasting this sweet!

Today was just a lazy one, spending all our time indoors because the temps broke into triple digits.  We had lunch at Jason's Deli, then stopped in to REI to see what was new there.  I found my kayak:

Look....a seat.  A REAL SEAT!!  I would have bought it except for 3 things; no way to get it home, no place to store it if I got it home, and they kept pestering me for $1,000.  :(

Now we're back home, probably in for the day.  I can see some sangria in my future, but besides that....?  Hope you had a good weekend, too.  :)

Cabin Fever

What kind of phobia is it when you can't stay inside for too long at a time?  It's sort of like "cabin fever", but it sets in after about 3 or 4 hours.  Whatever it is, I have it.  Today K and I both have time off, and we're looking for ways to use it up.  First we're going to Wolfe/Ritz Camera and pick up some prints of Emma Belle that we're going to frame.  Then we're going by the vet's office to pick up Emma's ashes.  To some this might seem icky, but I find it very appropriate.  It is, after all, what I wish for myself some day.   She'll be put in a special place alongside Tara Belle, who died almost 5 years ago.

Then lunch at Fuzzy's Tacos.  They have the best tempura shrimp tacos, and of course some queso and guac, too.  An outing just isn't right to me without a visit to a bookstore, so we'll hit one of those, too, while we're out.  Finally, REI Co-op has been pushing all my impulse buttons today, so we'll drop in for a quick look-see.  Maybe they'll be giving away kayaks today to the first 10 people who come in on bended knees and grovel.  Or maybe I could get K to wear her "Erin Brockovich" shirt.  Yeah, we'd probably have better luck with that than with me groveling.  Haha!

That ought to burn at least half the day.  Any suggestions for the other half?  (Besides that.  I've already tried.)

Move over Lewis & Clark....

....make room for Scott & Kelly.

Yesterday evening K and I took a class at REI Coop (an outdoors store) on map and compass reading.  Years ago I knew how to navigate by compass but over the years I've forgotten most of it.  We hope to be able to go back to Colorado next year and thought we'd try some hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, hence our new found interest in maps and compasses.

Now if we get lost we can put our new skills to use....or use our iPhones to just call for help.  (Just doesn't sound as rugged, does it?)

We have reservations to rent some kayaks this weekend and paddle around White Rock Lake.  They've actually rigged a portion of the Trinity River to include some rapids for recreational use, but I think we're a long way from being able to do that.  Baby steps first.

Tropical Storm Don is in the Gulf of Mexico and looks to eventually make landfall somewhere along the lower Texas coast.  While I certainly don't want to see anyone get hurt by it, some rain would be welcome.  We're bone dry here, some lakes so low you can't put a boat in, some further west totally dry.  This heat and drought is working its way to the very top of the record books.  I'm hoping the northern-most projected storm track, the one that comes closest to us, will be the correct one.

One day closer to the weekend.  Yea!
