The world's most expensive sauce pan

Our old pots and pans, or as K calls them, our "cookware", were pretty much crap.  We had been talking about buying some good quality replacements, but it seemed to just stay on our (my) back burner.  Until yesterday.

We received one of Bed, Bath, and Beyond's coupons in the mail and figured we'd might as well take advantage of it....20% off is nothing to sneeze at.

See that sauce pan on the right, above the griddle?  I went in thinking we'd just buy that for a start, but instead we came out with the whole set.

But wait....there's MORE!

They had a special promo going on:  if you buy enough Calphalon products they give you (maybe "give" is the wrong word) a $50 gift card, too.  20% off PLUS $50.  Sweet!

But looking back on our shopping experience I think I came up on the short end.  I mean, K got some new pots and pans cookware AND a $50 gift card, but she wouldn't let me buy anything I wanted.

K made me put her back.  How fair is that?  *pout*

I read an interesting article in the paper that said yellow, orange, teal, and green cars, in that order, had the highest resale values, on average about $1,500 more than similar cars in the more common white (21% market share), black (19%), gray (17%) or silver (15%) colors.

Maybe by the time I buy my next car (no time soon) VW will bring back their Fahrenheit Edition GTI.  I dunno....you think it would be a cop magnet?  The last thing I need is to drive a cop magnet.  I thought it interesting that red wasn't on either list.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did NOT see this coming!
We had a gray drizzly day yesterday, which was rather nice as it kept the temps down.  But last night when I took the dog out the skies were clear.  I just assumed (yes, I know) that we were back to "hot and dry".
Instead, this ^ is what I woke up to.  Yikes!  No complaints here....we desperately need the rain.
It's been pretty intense so far this morning.  Lightning, thunder, 60-70 mph winds....luckily I had just enough warning to get my outdoor furniture safely inside.
We're currently under Stage 3 water restrictions:  Lawn watering only one day every other week, limits on car washing, swimming pool filling, etc.  And it's just the START of summer.
They say unless we get lots of rain soon we'll go to Stage 4 restrictions....no lawn watering at all.  Imagine how this will impact lawn maintenance crews, landscape contractors, car washes, etc.
Meanwhile, less than 100 miles south it's flooding.  Go figure.
Cars and Coffee, April 2014
A cool, cloudy early morning didn't deter the few thousand Cars and Coffee fans who came out to see interesting cars.  My friend Neil and I met there around 7:30 and were pleased with the offerings this month.
The first car I stumbled across as I entered was this Austin Healey 3000.
It's a good thing K doesn't let me take my checkbook to C&C, never mind that my mad money account wouldn't buy even one of the wire wheels on this beauty.  (I could have a helluva nice head start before the check bounced, though.)
The Brits were well represented today by some other fine examples, too, like this MGB GT V8....
....and it's topless cousin, this MGB roadster.
But I've saved the best from Morris Garages 'till last, this 1961 MGA.
Listen up Joe H:  Rob the grandkid's piggy bank, mortgage the house, sell a kidney, whatever you have to do....the original (and still current) owner, a retired TWA pilot, is downsizing his lifestyle and is willing to part with this prized toy.
For a more-than-fair price of $26K you can relive your yout and once again own a MGA.  Wow, was this car nice!
On to something(s) German:  I still like this Z3M Coupe.  It was shunned by buyers originally, but I think its odd shape is interestingly quirky.
Eat your heart out Winnebago.  THIS is Bohemian RV-ing at its finest!
 It also sported my co-favorite sign of the day.  :)
A couple of other, slightly hotter VW's caught my eye today too, like this R model (V6, AWD)....
....and this GTI.  (The Gen-7 model will be here in the States soon.)
How 'bout some new American muscle?  This is the new Dodge Viper, which sported the finest rear end I saw today.  (Or at least the finest that I'll admit to ;)  I wonder if Italian coachbuilder Zagato knows Dodge has pinched their famous "double bubble" roof design?
And in fairness, some old American muscle, too:  This really nice Plymouth Barracuda.  (Remember the Barracuda?  Remember Plymouth?)
Lots of Jeeps there today, too.  None, though, were any nicer than this classic Willys Jeep pickup.
It was wearing my other co-favorite sign of the day.  Beautiful rifle in the gun rack, too.  (Hey, this IS Texas :)
 Screw Mustangs!
THIS is the Ford I want!
 Here's some trivia for you:  This is a '50's vintage Goggomobil.
 It was built in Bavaria after WWII, I'm guessing to satisfy an urgent need by circus clowns to have a tiny car to climb out of.
In a more serious vein, this is a very rare Nash Healey, and a spectacular example it is, too!  It's the first one I've ever seen in the flesh.
This was an odd duck of a car, a collaboration between the American Nash-Kelvinator Co. and England's Donald Healey Motors (who later built my fave, the Austin Healey).
It was a Nash Healey that was driven by Clark Kent in several episodes of TV's The Adventures of Superman (when he wasn't wearing his leotards and leaping over tall buildings in a single bound).
I'll close out this month's C&C review with this cute little '50's vintage BMW Isetta 300 that the owner has nicknamed "Snail".
As it drove off you could almost hear everyone say in unison,
 "Look at that S-CAR-GO!"  :)
Hope you enjoyed Cars and Coffee, April 2014.
Cars, cars, and more cars!
I was out of pocket most of yesterday as K took the day off and we joined up with my friend Neil and attended the Dallas Auto Show.  We always like to go on a weekday as weekends are a freakin' zoo.  We met up in suburbia and rode the light rail train to the Convention Center in downtown Dallas....the best $5 I ever spent!
Compared to some of the large auto shows around the world....LA, NY, Geneva, Frankfurt, South Fargo ND, Bugtussle AL, etc, it isn't much.  No wild concept cars, no unveils, none of that.  But still this year's show was surprisingly good.
The bright overhead lights that made the cars stand out when seen directly created some awful photo glare, but here goes anyway:
K really liked the new 2015 Mini Cooper S.
I concur.  It was a winner.  I understand they want to keep the retro theme, but the changes from last year's model are too minor to the untrained eye, even though underneath it's completely new.  Still a definite keeper, though.
I specifically went to see the new Mazda 3.  The auto press has given it great reviews, and while I haven't yet driven one, I must say I was disappointed.  The interior just didn't measure up, for example.
The styling was nice, but overall I gave it just a "Meh".
Aston Martin's really tick all my boxes, they're so beautiful.
Even the big 4-door Aston Rapide S was stunning.  The price, though, was just plain shocking!
We were told this is the only Pagani Who Are Ya * currently in the US.  No wonder, at a million bucks plus!
* If you can pronounce it, you're a better person than me!
It was actually pretty gaudy.
Yet another McLaren MP4-12-C.  I see these things all over town.  Or maybe there's just this one and they keep driving it in circles.
A Rolls Royce Wraith.  A two-door Rolls?  Umm....no!
I did like the crystal (?) Spirit of Ecstasy, though.  :)
The Range Rover Evoque was especially impressive.  The little splash of mud behind the rear wheel was a nice touch, letting us know it's a serious off-roader.  *snicker*
For a mere $47K it can be yours.
Although the design is getting rather long in the tooth, I still like an Audi TT.  Overpriced, though.  :(
Same with the Audi R8.
Here's Lexus' attempt to prove it isn't just an old man's car:  the LFA.  It's a $350K super car that took 10 years to design/build.  It's quite good they say, but for a lot less than that you could have....
 ....this Ferrari 458 Italia.  Game, set, match!
I have friends who have Jaguars, and frankly, they spend waaaay too much time in the shop to impress me.  Still, this new F-Type is absolutely gorgeous!
I made it a point to go check out the BMW's.  I really wanted to like them, but after looking them over I was even less impressed than when I got there.  They didn't have the nice thunk you like to hear when you close the door, and the seats didn't swallow me like I want them to.
The new "baby" Maserati, the Ghibli.  Nice, but no cigar.
The latest iteration of the car that changes super premium fuel into tire smoke and noise, the Dodge Viper.
The Fiat 500 Abarth, because I always include one in my car show pics.
I did find my next car at the show, the upcoming (this summer), all new (although outwardly it's only slightly evolutionary looking), Volkswagen GTI:
They say it, like the previous gen GTI, has magnificent power, handling, comfort, and practicality....a daily driver you can thoroughly enjoy.  The interior quality will blow you away....I can't tell you how impressed I was with the fit and finish.  Kudos, VeeDub!  Seriously, when I'm ready to put my now-7-year-old Audi out to pasture, this is what I will be buying.  :)
And now just some random shots of select vintage cars on display:
Porsche 356
Buick ____
Early Corvette
The inspiration for "Pimp My Ride"?
Yeah....a purple Lincoln.  :0
Nice Jag
Rumble seat on a T-Bird?
That was the Dallas Auto Show 2014.  Next week....Cars and coffee.  :)
