Cars and Coffee, April 2013 + 1st art show of the season

This was the first Saturday in April which means....Cars and Coffee!   

The parking lot was already rapidly filling up by 7 AM when I arrived.  

As usual about a thousand cars were there, 500 being your typical Mustangs, Corvettes, and Camaros.  However, there was only ONE of these....the biggest mobile meat smoker ever.  I've seen some small smokers (grills) on trailers that aficionados take to BBQ cook-offs, but this thing was ridiculous!  I didn't hang around it to see if they fired it up and cooked for the crowd or were just showing it off.

A Dino 246.  This was a Ferrari in all but name.  It was meant to be an entry level Ferrari with 6 cylinders, the more powerful 12 cylinder models carrying the magic Ferrari name.  It was named by Enzo Ferrari to honor his late son Alfredo, better known as "Dino".

Here's a 50's era Ferrari ___....I can't remember the number.  Anyone help me out?

Remember this odd duck from a couple months ago?  I met the owner today and found out that it was actually commissioned by a hunting lodge in Maine to carry their guests and equipment around the property.  And all this time I thought it was just some wacko's project to get him out of the house.

The Ford Model A (?) Club was well represented.

Oooooohhh!  I ache....

While I'm not a big fan of Corvettes, I must admit this '59 (?) was impressive.

Believe it or not this used to be a '49 Mercury.  Ya' think the original owner would recognize it?

A "keeper" Austin Healey 3000 Mk III.  But it really needs to lose that rear tail light on the boot lid. 

An original Toyota FJ, arguably the best off-roader ever, is an icon today.

The plot thickens:  K really wants a convertible.  I really want a Fiat 500 Abarth (the souped-up model).  Today I learned they're now making a convertible version of the Abarth.  Maybe we could share?  I'm thinking 90/10.  ;)

After the car show I picked up K and we went to the area's first art show of the year in Fairview.  It was small, but what the heck....it was free.

We're already plotting on how best to piss-off the HOA if/when we find a suitable site to build a home on.  I think a couple of these 6-foot-tall steel pink flamingos in the front yard should do it.  *zing*

 

We stopped in to a cool little coffee shop for a relaxer while we were out where I saw this interesting dropped-ceiling.  *save for future reference*  How do you think it would look suspended over a soft-contemporary kitchen?

After that....home to watch a taped rugby game on TV.  That was my Saturday.  Not too shabby, huh?  Hope you had a pleasant day, too.

Happy Valentine's Day

This is my Valentine, the lovely and talented "K"....

Fortunately she doesn't get spiffed up too often, as she, like me, is much too casual for that...

Ahh...better!

We have a pretty good GREAT life together!  Oh sure, we sling some arrows now and then, but we're both pretty bad shots.  She takes great care of me, and I try to do the same for her.

We've been to a few fun places....

With hopefully a lot more to come.

She's a real adventure junkie, too.  I like that!  (We're at the front, naturally.)

And she's not at all demanding.  Even a day at a local art show has her grinning ear-to-ear.

She loves my daughters, and they love "Miss Kelly", too.  So do all the young 'uns.

I love her much, and best of all, she loves me right back.  Sweet!

Main Street Arts Fest; debrief w/ photos

This morning K and I drove to Ft. Worth to take in their Main Street Arts Festival. It's touted as one of the top 3 arts festivals in the country, and I wouldn't argue with that claim. Not long after we arrived the streets began to fill. This is what the scene looked like, stretching for 6 or more long blocks:

She wore a jacket, a fanny pack, a camelback (water carrier)....I swear, armies have marched across continents carrying less gear. I wore shorts and a T-shirt as it was in the mid-70's well before lunch. It couldn't have been better weather.

The event was literally in the heart of downtown Foat Wuth, where they have an interesting mix of old and new buildings. I thought this was a cool effect.

Last year we had lunch on this rooftop deck at The Flying Saucer. The ambiance was good, the food, not so. This year we tried the street food and weren't disappointed.

At each end of Main Street they had a stage set up, with different groups/genres performing throughout the day and evening. We liked what we heard, although we were spared the hard-core C&W that I'm sure came later.

As the mural on the side of this building will attest, Ft. Worth is still known as "Cowtown".

K and I were both impressed with the lady who made hand-crafted leather-bound journals. They were beautiful...in fact I would be scared to actually write in one. It would be like defacing a work of art. (The photo is from her website.) Check her out here.

I was captivated by this kinetic sculpture. It sent little balls round and round, up and down, over and over with exact precision. K finally had to drag me away. I can imagine how long it took to craft, and understand why it cost nearly $3K.

Our indulgence for the day was us each having a Mojito. It's a Cuban drink made with lime, mint, rum, sugar water, and a bit of 7-Up. Darn good drink!

That's all folks. It was a great day, and a great arts festival. There is another one in Richardson, TX, (closer to us) in just a couple of weeks. We'll be there, too. Have a relaxing Sunday, everyone.
